StreamSavvy Guide: What to watch December 28, 2016

StreamSavvy’s guide for the best tv, what to watch, and how to stream it December 28, 2016, including the PBS special, Frontline: Exodus, and the Russell Athletic Bowl streaming live on ESPN.

We normally stick to TV shows, but since it’s the holidays and Netflix actually got a pretty big movie, we’re going to sneak that in today with a special from PBS for your daily best in TV.

Inside the European Refugee Crisis, Frontline: Exodus

Thousands of refugees and migrants fleeing war, persecution and hardship risk everything for a better life in a European country every year. Only the blessed few actually escape their home countries and travel safely across the Mediterranean in anything but seaworthy, makeshift boats. Over the last two years, more than 1.3 million people have arrived in Europe after crossing the Mediterranean. Nearly 9,000 have died or gone missing along the way.

Frontline: Exodus, a PBS special, gives you never-before-seen access to the struggles of the refugee journey. Director James Bluemel combines his footage with video filmed by refugees and migrants themselves throughout the 2-hour special.

Frontline: Exodus aired for the first time last but is available today for streaming online. (PBS)

How to watch: you can watch right now online through the PBS website or your can stream it through the PBS app which is free.

New to Netflix, Captain America: Civil War

For all you Marvel fans out there. Or you not-so-Marvel fans that wanted to wait until you didn’t have to pay $20 to see it at the theater. Captain America: Civil War hit Netflix this week. For real – Netflix got a decently big movie, and we’re pumped to watch it tonight.

The film was released in theaters in May and is the long-awaited sequel to the 2011 Captain America: First Avenger film. The plot centers on the increasing political pressure for accountability for the actions of the Avengers when they lead to collateral damage. Captain America (Chris Evans) believes superheroes should remain free to defend humanity without government interference. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) vehemently disagree and sides with the government accountability. With these two superheroes digging in on opposite sides, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) have to decide where they stand in an escalating battle.

How to watch: you can watch online, on your mobile device, on your smart TV, or on your streaming device through the Netflix app. If you don’t have it, or aren’t using your parents’ / sister’s / neighbor’s login, you can sign up for a free trial then roll into a $9.99 per month subscription if you like it.

Bowl Game of the Day: WVU vs. Miami

Two programs going in different directions. West Virginia University takes on University of Miami in the Russell Athletic Bowl this evening. As the team clash in Orlando, the story of a West Virginia program having its best season in almost a decade continues to unfold. On the other side of the field is a Miami team that carries a long tradition of winning but continues to look for its identity in the latest chapter of college football. (ESPN 5:30/4:30c)

Netflix Premiere: Travelers

The year ending doesn’t mean that Netflix is letting up on fresh content. Actually it’s the opposite. Netflix continues to drop great shows when we need binge-worthy TV in cold weeks of winter.

Season One of the Travelers hits Netflix today as its latest sci-fi, time travel, human existence original. Centuries into the future, the humans that are surviving find a way to send consciousness back in time, to people living in the 21st century. Through this process, these “travelers” take on the lives of the 21st century people, and attempt to save humanity from the disastrous path that its on. (Netflix)

How to watch: watch online, on your mobile device, on your smart TV, or on your streaming device through the Netflix app. If you don’t have it, or aren’t using your parents’ / sister’s / neighbor’s login, you can sign up for a free trial then roll into a $9.99 per month subscription if you like it.

Stream Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Golden State Warriors

Christmas Day Rematch: Stream the Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Golden State Warriors

The Cavs-Warriors has become the best rivalry in pro basketball. The teams have clashed in back-to-back NBA championship games. The Warriors took the first meeting in 2015, and the Cleveland Cavaliers took the 2016 championship 4-3 in a heated battle. As the rivalry takes center stage on Christmas day, at least put the game on in the background as you put together that 3,427 piece kitchen set for your niece.  (ABC 2:30/1:30c)

How to watch: The best way to watch the game live is through the WatchESPN app. First you’ll need to sign up for Sling TV (Orange) or Playstation Vue (all tiers). They’re both offering free trial subscriptions now. Once you’ve signed up for one of these services, you can use your login credentials to sign in to the Watch ESPN app which will allow you to stream the game.

You can also stream the game through Sling TV (Broadcast Extra). This gives you access to stream ABC live in select locations, which means most major cities. It also means you’ll need one of the base package options, Orange or Blue. Then you can add the Broadcast Extra add-on for $5 per month.

There’s always the digital antenna that works great if you’re fairly close to a major broadcast station and will let you watch the game free in HD.

Stream Man in the High Castle

Catch up Binge: The Man in the High Castle

Amazon blessed us with Season 2 of Man in the High Castle last weekend, but with all the shopping we had to do (and we mean start our shopping), we didn’t get to it. So if you’re like us and haven’t binged it one of the best shows from Amazon, and one of the best over the past two years period, then carve out some time to watch it this weekend.

If you’re new to the show, it’s a snapshot into an alternate history of what life in America would look like if after WWII if the Nazis had won the war. The show dives into this dystopian scenario, splitting the United States into three districts, one controlled by the Japanese, one controlled by the Nazis, and a “neutral” zone between the two. There’s a lot of darkness and oppression. But the show is really about the ray of hope that emerges through films that are uncovered and appear to show a different world. The show follows a woman who believes the films will unlock freedom and is determined to find their mysterious keeper of the films.

How to watch: watch through the Amazon Instant app on your mobile phone or through your TV streaming device.

Atlanta

Here’s the thing. It’s 2016, and this year produced so much great television. It’s getting harder and harder to stay on top of watching everything. And as we move to streaming everything, sometimes the cable shows on networks like FX, get missed. So we’ll forgive you if you haven’t seen Danny Glover‘s Atlanta yet. But do yourself a favor and binge it up on the first season of this award nominated show over the holidays. We’ll show you how to binge it and then watch it when it airs again in 2017. You’re welcome.

Atlanta is an honest and real take on the rap game in the ATL. It’s the story of two cousins, Earnest “Earn” Marks (Donald Glover) and Alfred Miles (Brian Tyree Henry), as they climb to stardom in a cutthroat industry. And it succeeds in a big way with a finely-crafted and funny twist

The story begins with Earnest (Glover) coming back to Atlanta to see the stock of his cousin Alfred (Henry) rising in the Atlanta rap world. Unlike predictable, plot-driven comedies, Atlanta does an artful job of diving into its characters while handling topics like race, art, class, and identity with unique, fresh humor.

Here’s a 1-minute trailer if you still aren’t sure.

The Bottom Line

Atlanta, the FX show that premiered in September, has flown under the radar with some of the season’s big hits like, This Is Us and Westworld. However, the Danny Glover comedy about two cousins coming up in the Atlanta rap scene is a versatile comedy that will leave the award shows buzzing. A must watch.

How to watch and binge

Season 2 has yet to have an official premiere date. But it has been renewed and will most likely come back on the air during fall of 2017. You will be able to stream it live on Sling TV (Blue) or Playstation Vue (all tiers).

The first season is available for binging and can be streamed through Amazon.

How to Stream ESPN Live TV: What You Need to Know

How to Stream ESPN Live on TV Without Cable

A lot of people want to “cut the cable cord”, but the biggest hang-up is always the same, “I would, but I don’t know how to stream ESPN live sports” or “how do I get ESPN without cable”.

The StreamSavvy team has heard this again and again. And again. Thankfully, there’s a really easy answer and you can get ESPN without cable. Actually, there are a bunch of ways to stream ESPN live on TV or on phone. Just like you would with cable or satellite, but without the sketchy, always-paying-more-than-expected-two-year-contracts that cable and satellite providers sucker you into.

Here’s what you need to know how to stream ESPN live TV without cable. There are four great ways to go about it:

Sling TV

Sling TV is an app that you can get on your phone, streaming device (like a Roku, Chromecast, or Amazon Fire Stick), or certain smart TVs. There are three basic options that Sling offers: Orange, Blue, and Orang+Blue. To access of of the best ways to get ESPN without cable, you will need Sling Orange or Orange+Blue. In addition to streaming ESPN live, this will also give you ESPN 2 and over 20 cable network channels, like TBS, TNT, CNN, and HGTV. You pay month-by-month, there are no long-term contracts, and you can cancel at any time. The cost of Sling TV Orange is $20 per month and the cost of Sling TV Orange+Blue is $40 per month.

Playstation Vue

Playstation Vue is also an app that you can get on your phone, streaming device (like a Roku, Chromecast, or Amazon Fire Stick), gaming console, or certain smart TVs. YOU DO NOT NEED A PLAYSTATION GAMING CONSOLE. Playstation Vue has four tiers: Access, Core, Elite, and Ultra. To stream ESPN live TV and ESPN 2, the entry-level tier is all you need. For any of the PS Vue tiers, you pay month-by-month, there are no long-term contracts, and you can cancel at any time. This tier also gives you about 50 cable network channels including FS1, TNT, TBS, and FX. The cost of the Access package is $29.99 per month.

DirecTV Now

DirecTV Now is the newest streaming option on the market. It also allows you to stream ESPN live TV through its app. Although it’s on a more limited set of devices compared to the other apps that get you access to watch ESPN live, DirecTV Now is expanding its device footprint. The base price is $35 per month, and like the other options, you pay month-by-month, there are no long-term contracts, and you can cancel at any time.

WatchESPN

WatchESPN is the official streaming app for ESPN. The WatchESPN app gives you great access to stream games that are airing live on ESPN. Traditionally, you needed a cable or satellite TV subscription. Then you could log into WatchESPN with your provider credentials. However, now you can get access to stream live sports on ESPN through the WatchESPN app using your Sling TV (Orange) or Playstation Vue (all tiers) credentials. In addition to watching live games on ESPN, you can also watch live TV for games on partner channels. This includes ABC, ESPN 2, and a ton of other smaller games on ESPN 3. Signing up for the WatchESPN app with Sling and PS Vue credentials is super easy. We like easy when it comes to figuring out how to stream ESPN live.

The Selection: Special Ops Experiment

Could you handle it? Or would you quit? Stream The Selection as 30 ordinary civilians go through Special Ops training. Trust us, it’s worth watching this one.

The History Channel launches its newest series December 8th with the first of eight The Selection: Special Operations Experiment episodes.

How to Stream the Selection

The show airs at 10/9c on Thursday nights.

How to stream: You can stream the History Channel through Sling TV (Orange or Blue).

About the Show

The unscripted series follows 30 men and women as they are pushed to the edge and beyond by a team of instructors trained by Navy SEALs, Green Berets, and Army Rangers. The elite team of instructors breaks the participants down both mentally and physically through tear gas, psychological warfare, interrogation tactics, and much more.

The cool thing about this show is that there is no reward. You can’t be “being voted off the island”. And there’s definitely no “ring ceremony”. No. This show is about pride. It’s about standing up to the toughest training in the world and coming out a tested warrior. At any time, any one of the participants can ring the bell and walk away.

“Throughout the history of our nation, Special Operations training tactics has played an integral part in our military endeavors and this series gives viewers a rare glimpse into what it takes to be selected among the elite,” said Paul Cabana, Executive Vice President and Head of Programming, HISTORY. “‘The Selection’ will offer civilians the unique opportunity to take part in an immersive, authentic course instructed by different branches leading together, while giving viewers insight into the origins of these challenges.”

How To Watch Shows Online Free

Everyday more TV shows come available online or through apps. Some of the shows are free, and some of the content is paid. If you know where to look and you’re okay waiting a day after live airing to watch TV shows, then you’re in luck. You can watch free TV.

There are always sketchy ways to watch content, like people on Periscope allowing you to “watch” a show on their TV. It happens. If you’re like us, you want a quality watching experience – great shows in HD. But you don’t want to subject your computer to the evils of weird and illegal sites.

To help you out, here are some of our favorite apps and sites to watch TV shows for free online. Something to note, since they are free to watch, for almost all of the sites or apps, you will have to watch commercials…but it’s free. So we can live with it. Happy watching!

  1. NBC. The NBC app is a great place to catch a lot of free TV. There’s a similar selection of free shows nbc.com as well. On nbc.com, the episodes typically come available 24 hours after airing, and the two most recent episodes can be viewed without having cable / satellite credentials.
  2. Crackle. A great place to look for old favorite TV shows, like Seinfeld and Married with Children. However, the one of the things that we love most about Crackle? Their original shows. Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is a legit great show, and not just because it’s free.
  3. PBS. A selection of PBS’s content is available online and through their app. Genuinely quality content comes through the Masterpiece shows, and this is a great place to start a search if you’re looking for something free to watch.
  4. Newsy. As the name would suggest, a go-to spot for free news content. It’s one of the fastest growing video news sources it’s definitely worth scanning through their available videos when you want to catch up on news.
  5. CBS News app. This is one of our favorite news apps out there, and the CBS digital team does a great job of providing a continuous loop of news, covering the biggest stories of the day.

El Clasico

Yes! It’s here.

There are rivalries in sports. Yankees-Red Sox. Ohio State-Michigan. Packers-Bears.

Then there’s THE rivalry between the two giants of La Liga, Real Madrid and Barcelona. 114 years in the making. The rivalry represents so much more than just soccer. For the two Spanish sides, it is about political struggle, cultural identity…then there’s the soccer too.

Whether you’re a big soccer fan or not, this one is worth watching as you will see the world’s best,  on one of the biggest stages as the teams square off at Barcelona’s Camp Nou.

Madrid is in the best position they’ve been in for years. They sit atop La Liga standings with an unblemished record. Barcelona is in a must win situation.

“If we win on Saturday, things will look different,” Gerard Pique said. “If we lose, things will become very complicated.”

The Barcelona defender went further, “Madrid have the luxury of being able to lose. We don’t.”

So wake up, make yourself some waffles, pour yourself a good cup coffee, maybe throw some Bailey’s in it, and turn on THE game.

When: 10:15am EST

Here’s how to watch it:

The game will be live streamed through Bein Sports. To access the Bein Sports channel, you have three options.
