The tradition began hundreds of years ago. George Washington, gave a farewell speech to the nation as he concluded his time as the first President of the United States. Tonight, Barack Obama takes his place in history as he returns to Chicago to deliver his farewell address.

“Since 2009, we’ve faced our fair share of challenges, and come through them stronger,” Mr. Obama shared with supporters previewing the speech in an email. “That’s because we have never let go of a belief that has guided us ever since our founding—our conviction that, together, we can change this country for the better.”
