How to Watch Sports Without Cable

There’s that friend who “cut the cord”. And he swears you can watch sports without cable…but you still aren’t convinced.

Can you watch live sports without cable?

Absolutely. In fact, without cable you have the complete freedom to choose how to watch sports and what type of sports you want to watch. And you can find most any game legally without resorting to those sketchy sites that make your computer start to smoke.

The first thing anyone who watches sports wants to know is how to watch ESPN without cable. We thought streaming ESPN was important enough to have its own guide.

There are also ways to watch sports free without cable. Here are some of the examples:

  • Digital Antenna. Depending on your location (works best by larger metropolitan areas), a great source to watch major games on broadcast TV. So if the game’s on ABC, NBC, CBS, or FOX, the digital antenna is a great way to go.
  • Twitter. Twitter is getting into streaming sports, and it’s free. For the 2016 NFL season, Twitter is streaming 10 Thursday night games. They streamed Wimbledon and have the rights to stream MLB and NHL games in 2017. Look for more from them.
  • YouTube. If you missed your favorite college football team live, chances are that you can stream the game on YoutTube the next day. For the major teams, there may even be shortened versions that give you every single play in less than an hour.

The Best Options for Streaming Sports

The subscription options to stream football, stream basketball, stream baseball, and stream just about any sport are many. For some specific ways to on how to watch sports without cable, here are some of the best:

  • Sling TV. This is a streaming application that gives you a set of channels and feels like cable, but you can cancel or subscribe at any time. With Sling, you have the option of Orange ($20), Blue ($25), or Orange+Blue ($40) tiers. Depending on which you choose, you can get ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, and Fox Sports local networks. There is also a Sports add-on package that gets you the complement of ESPN and other sports channels. For Cricket fans, Sling also has an option to add on Willow, which will give you the access to watch cricket by streaming cricket content through the Willow channel. Sling is available on most mobile devices and most streaming devices (i.e. Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, Apple TV, etc.).
  • Playstation Vue. No you do not need a Playstation gaming system to subscribe to Playstation Vue. It is an app that you subscribe to and provides a great way to watch live sports without cable. PS Vue has four tiers starting at $30. The best value tier for the avid sports fan is the $35 tier that gives you access to stream sports from a number of channels from ESPN to Fox Sports to the The Big Ten Network and everything in between. Playstation Vue is available on most mobile devices and select streaming devices.
  • FuboTV. As the name suggests, FuboTV is all about soccer. For $9.99 per month, you can stream soccer through a number of channels like Bein Sports. With almost a major match everyday, this is a great option for the avid soccer fan.
  • WatchESPN app. The WatchESPN app offers a limited amount of content to someone with credentials from a cable provider or streaming service (like Sling TV and Playstation Vue).

If you are streaming without cable, and you haven’t downloaded the StreamSavvy mobile app, you’ll probably end up missing sports. In fact, a big part of why we built StreamSavvy was to help ourselves know how to watch live sports.
