StreamSavvy Guide: What to watch January 9, 2017

StreamSavvy’s daily guide for the best TV from January 9, 2017. Watch the College Football Championship without cable tonight or stream the Crown. Here’s the post with what to watch, why you should check it out, and how to stream it.

The Hollywood Foreign Press made it pretty clear last night. The show to watch from 2016 is The Crown. The Netflix original took the Best Television Series Drama, and Claire Foy took the best actress award in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Television Series….and then there’s a little football game tonight. There you  have it.

Binge The Crown

Golden Globe Winner: The Crown

The $100 million bet from Netflix. The Crown is a period drama and is Netflix’s attempt to capitalize on the popularity of shows like Downton Abbey and to a lesser extent Peaky Blinders.

The first season, released in November 2016, is the story of the beginning of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign of the United Kingdom. The Crown follows gives us an inside look at Queen Elizabeth II starting just before her wedding in 1947. The plan is for six seasons that will bring the story right up to the present day.

The average person spends 4 YEARS of their lives searching for something to watch. Really. Take your life back and download the StreamSavvy mobile app FREE right now.

Here’s the bottom line on The Crown. If you’re looking for an exciting, heart pounding drama with tons of violence, sex, and messiness, this is NOT the show for you. If you want to see Claire Foy, the actress who plays Queen Elizabeth, kill it by pulling you into the struggle between being a queen and being a young woman all with crazy good cinematography, then this is a great watch. (Netflix)

How to watch: you can watch online, on your mobile device, on your smart TV, or on your streaming device through the Netflix app. If you don’t have it, or aren’t using your parents’ / sister’s / neighbor’s login, you can sign up for a free trial then roll into a $9.99 per month subscription if you like it.

Watch the College Football Championship without cable

Watch the College Football Championship without Cable

It’s starts with the first whistle kicking off two-a-days in August. Half a year later, two teams have stood the test of time and go head-to-head. As the Clemson Tigers take on the Alabama Crimson Tide tonight for the title of National Champion, we’re all wondering if anyone can beat that insane Alabama defense.

The answer is yes. The winning formula is a super talented D-line and Deshaun Watson. Watson tore up the Ohio State Buckeyes in the semifinal game while the defense shut out the Buckeyes in a bowl game for the first time in almost 100 years. If any team can take down Alabama tonight, it’s the Clemson Tigers. (ESPN 8/7c)

New to Netflix: One Day at a Time

New to Netflix: One Day at a Time

A “new oldie” on Netflix. One Day at a Time is the latest original series to drop on Netflix, and it’s already getting tons of great buzz. The Netflix original is a remake of the 1975 version produced by Norman Lear. I think we’re supposed to know who that is. On further research, he is a TV production legend who has been dropping hit shows for decades.

The Netflix series, with its 13 episode first season, is all about a Cuban-American family. Penelope is the matriarch of the family and a former military veteran who is separated from her husband. She’s raising a teenaged daughter, the idealist, and a son, a socially awkward middle-schooler. Adding to the mix is Penelope’s mother, Lydia, who pops up to help out around the house.

StreamSavvy’s daily guide for the best TV from January 5, 2017. Stream the Nashville or Blacklist season premiere. Here’s the post with what to watch, why you should check it out, and how to stream it.

The week is finishing up strong with more season premieres, series premieres, and shows picking up with new episodes after the holiday break.

Watch Nashville Online

Season Premiere: Nashville

Nashville returns for its 5th season. This time it’s on CMT though. Not ABC. The CMT home is a perfect fit for the show and will take it back to the roots of country music now that the show was discontinued by the major network.

This season with new show runners promises to be a more thoughtful approach. Instead of frivolous hooks in each episode in the ABC version, the re-vamped Nashville looks to develop the narrative of the story. You can see for yourself in the 2-hour premiere tonight.

Exclusive: The only TV app you’ll ever need. Discover trending shows. See what’s live and where to stream it. Download the StreamSavvy mobile app FREE right now

Season 5 jumps in where Season 4 left off. Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere) begins the new season as the lone survivor of the plane crash and all the feels that come with that. Lots of buzz around this one. (CMT 9/8c)

How to watch: you can stream the new episode tonight on CMT through Sling TV. You’ll need one of the base packages, either the Orange for $20 per month or Blue package for $25 per month. Once you have a base subscription, you can add the Comedy Extra for $5 per month. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense that CMT is in the “Comedy” add-on, but that’s where it is.

If you’re cool with waiting or want to watch whenever you want, Nashville will stream on Hulu. With a subscription to Hulu, you will be able to watch tonight’s episode tomorrow night. And for the rest of Season 5, Hulu will be streaming the newest episode 24 hours after it first airs on CMT.

Each show will feature a woman or a man as they test out the kissing skills of ten potential matches. The top two candidates score dates with the main kisser.

The show has been wildly successful in foreign markets, including Germany, Australia, and Denmark.

Rachel DeAlto, a communications expert, relationship expert, coach, motivational speaker, and hypnotherapist, hosts the show. Best known for Married at First Sight, her new show has us interested. Here’s to kissing 2017 hello. Sorry. Couldn’t help it. (FYI 10/9c)

StreamSavvy’s daily guide for the best TV from January 2, 2017. Stream Beyond, the Rose Bowl Parade, and the best college bowls of the day that you can watch online on ESPN. Here’s the post with what to watch, why you should check it out, and how to stream it.

Happy New Year! 2017 isn’t wasting any time in jumping back into the deep end of TV show land. After a weekend of terrible live performances, (Ronda Rousey, Mariah Carey, Ohio State football), we could use it. With lots of season premieres and series premieres, there’s lots to watch. But first, we have “New Years Day Observed”. That means a line up with some great college football along with the Rose Parade to get the week started.

Stream the Rose Parade

New Years Day Tradition: The Rose Parade

Today marks the 128th Rose Parade and a family tradition unlike any other. Not really. But what would a New Years morning be without the slow procession of floats, bands, and dancers on in the background?

When the Rose Parade kicks of at 11am ET this morning in the perfect paradise of a downtown Pasadena setting, it will be the result of over 80,000 hours of work. It’s America’s New Year celebration to welcome the world to first day of the year, and a tradition of community spirit and love of pageantry on display from Pasadena for more than 100 years. It also sets the stage for the Rose Bowl game, which carries the tradition through the entire day.

Exclusive: The only TV app you’ll ever need. Discover trending shows. See what’s live and where to stream it. Download the StreamSavvy mobile app FREE right now.

The theme for the parade this year is Echoes of Success. Check out the official guide. Happy New! (HGTV 11am ET)

How to watch: you can watch HGTV through Sling TV (both the Orange package and the Blue package) or Playstation Vue (all tiers).

Stream Beyond Premiere

Live then Binge: Beyond

It’s been a year since the ABC Family became Freeform, and now they’re trying new things. Tonight, the newest series from Freeform, Beyond, will air with two back-to-back episodes. At the same time, the entire 10-episode season will be released on Hulu and the other Freeform digital properties. An interesting “digital blitz” for a new show.

With a number of different ways to watch the show online and digitally, here are the deetz you need for the show. The show centers on Holden Matthews (Burkely Duffield) when he awakes from a 12-year coma. He’s somehow blessed new abilities that pull him into the center of a dangerous conspiracy. Holden also searches for answers to the questions of what happened to him during the past dozen years. However, the most important theme is Holden’s quest to understand why it he was in a coma to start with. (Freeform back-to-back new episodes at 9/8c and 10/9c)

How to watch: Freeform has done a great job of making this show available to you to watch online and across multiple streaming applications. To watch the 2 new episodes as they air tonight on the Freeform channel, you can stream in real time through Sling TV (Orange package) or Playstation Vue (all tiers).

If traditional TV isn’t your jam, you can stream the entire season on Hulu.

The Saturday bowl games pretty much sucked. So now we get a second chance some great bowls, and we get to stream and watch the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl. Check out the full bowl schedule and how to stream each game online without cable or satellite.

Here are the highlight games of the day:

Rose Bowl Game Presented by Northwestern Mutual – #5 Penn State vs. #9 USC. There was a pretty good case for Penn State to make the College Football playoffs. The selection committee chose Ohio State. We all know how that ended. Looking to drive that point home, Penn State takes on one of the hottest teams in college football in the USC Trojans. This should be a good one. (ESPN 5/4c)

Allstate Sugar Bowl – #14 Auburn Tigers vs. #7 Oklahoma Sooners. Not for the faint hearted. Two of the biggest offensive powerhouses go head-to-head in what promises to be an unforgettable shootout. (ESPN 8:30/7:30c)

StreamSavvy Guide: What to watch December 28, 2016

StreamSavvy’s guide for the best tv, what to watch, and how to stream it December 28, 2016, including the PBS special, Frontline: Exodus, and the Russell Athletic Bowl streaming live on ESPN.

We normally stick to TV shows, but since it’s the holidays and Netflix actually got a pretty big movie, we’re going to sneak that in today with a special from PBS for your daily best in TV.

Inside the European Refugee Crisis, Frontline: Exodus

Thousands of refugees and migrants fleeing war, persecution and hardship risk everything for a better life in a European country every year. Only the blessed few actually escape their home countries and travel safely across the Mediterranean in anything but seaworthy, makeshift boats. Over the last two years, more than 1.3 million people have arrived in Europe after crossing the Mediterranean. Nearly 9,000 have died or gone missing along the way.

Frontline: Exodus, a PBS special, gives you never-before-seen access to the struggles of the refugee journey. Director James Bluemel combines his footage with video filmed by refugees and migrants themselves throughout the 2-hour special.

Frontline: Exodus aired for the first time last but is available today for streaming online. (PBS)

How to watch: you can watch right now online through the PBS website or your can stream it through the PBS app which is free.

New to Netflix, Captain America: Civil War

For all you Marvel fans out there. Or you not-so-Marvel fans that wanted to wait until you didn’t have to pay $20 to see it at the theater. Captain America: Civil War hit Netflix this week. For real – Netflix got a decently big movie, and we’re pumped to watch it tonight.

The film was released in theaters in May and is the long-awaited sequel to the 2011 Captain America: First Avenger film. The plot centers on the increasing political pressure for accountability for the actions of the Avengers when they lead to collateral damage. Captain America (Chris Evans) believes superheroes should remain free to defend humanity without government interference. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) vehemently disagree and sides with the government accountability. With these two superheroes digging in on opposite sides, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) have to decide where they stand in an escalating battle.

Bowl Game of the Day: WVU vs. Miami

Two programs going in different directions. West Virginia University takes on University of Miami in the Russell Athletic Bowl this evening. As the team clash in Orlando, the story of a West Virginia program having its best season in almost a decade continues to unfold. On the other side of the field is a Miami team that carries a long tradition of winning but continues to look for its identity in the latest chapter of college football. (ESPN 5:30/4:30c)

StreamSavvy’s guide for the best tv, what to watch, and how to stream it December 27, 2016, including a Chasing Cameron, the newest Netflix original, and the Holiday Bowl on streaming live on ESPN.

New to Netflix: Netflix Original Chasing Cameron

Have you heard of Cameron Dallas? No? Then you’re probably old, and you should probably watch Chasing Cameron to see what’s up with kids these days. Just kidding – you’re not old.

However, as the Netflix original hits the internets today following the up-and-coming digital celebrity, it’s definitely something new for a lot of us. A 22-year-old rising to fame because of his 6-second video clips. So yes “digital celebrity” is now a thing.

More: The savvy TV app that shows you where to stream everything.

The show follows Cameron Dallas, a 22-year-old internet star. He’s built a following of over 35 million people across different social media platforms. He got his start on Vine, the now defunct app that showed only 6-second videos. Now he travels with his posse making YouTube and other videos that his fan base inhales.

The 10-episode first season of the Netflix original, Chasing Cameron, follows this new kind of superstar as he and his crew travel from Paris to Italy and end up in Australia. It shows the public persona and the private challenges for Cameron. We’re intrigued.

Bowl Game of the Day: Minnesota vs. Washington State

Suspensions. Sexual assault. Team boycotts. Yep. This has been the Minnesota Gophers story over the past two weeks since they wrapped up their regular Big Ten season. As the Gophers face the Washington State Cougars in the National Funding Holiday Bowl, they will be down 10 players who were suspended due to an investigation into a sexual assault case. Several of these players were major contributors to the Gopher team, including Antoine Winfield Jr., the team’s starting safety.

More: How to watch ESPN with cable or satellite TV.

The non-suspended Gopher players staged a boycott on December 15th because they believed the suspended players hadn’t received a fair process. By that weekend, after meeting the school president and holding multiple “players only” meetings, the boycott was called off, and the University of Minnesota had a football team playing in the Holiday Bowl again.

The National Funding Holiday Bowl is being played at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, CA. (ESPN 7/6c)

How to watch: With so many ways to stream live sports, you can stream ESPN through Sling TV (Orange) or Playstation Vue (all tiers). With both of these streaming services, you can use your login credentials to access to the WatchESPN app for free.
